The missile struck a residential area near a playground on Friday, causing widespread devastation. City officials have declared three days of mourning.

« This is the kind of pain you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy, » said regional governor Sergiy Lysak on Telegram.

Russia claimed it had targeted a restaurant where military commanders and Western instructors were meeting, but Ukrainian officials condemned the attack as a deliberate strike on civilians using an Iskander missile system.

President Zelensky, who was born in Kryvyi Rih, said the attack shows that Russia has no interest in peace. « Russian strikes happen every day. People die every day. There is only one reason this continues: Russia doesn’t want a ceasefire—and we can see it. The whole world can see it. Every missile, every attack drone proves that Russia seeks only war, » reacted Zelensky.

In a post on his X account, Zelensky called for « global pressure » on Russia and for strengthening Ukrainian forces, which, in his words, would « determine when this war will end. »

Despite U.S.-led efforts, including proposals for a ceasefire, Russia has rejected such initiatives, linking any truce to the lifting of Western sanctions.

« The United States, Europe, and the rest of the world have the power to compel Russia to abandon terror and war. And that must be done—because peace is necessary, » added Zelensky.

Kryvyi Rih, located about 60 km from the front line, has faced repeated attacks since Russia started its war on Ukraine.
