France plans to recognize a Palestinian state in the coming months, possibly during a UN conference in New York this June, President Emmanuel Macron said in a recent interview. The conference will be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
“We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months,” Macron, who this week visited Egypt, told France 5 television.
Macron said the move aims to promote mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine and strengthen France’s role in supporting regional stability. He emphasized the importance of encouraging those who support Palestine to also recognize Israel.
While France has long supported a two-state solution, formal recognition of Palestine would mark a major policy shift. The decision risks straining ties with Israel, which considers such actions by foreign states premature.
